Automatic standby generators work via an automatic transfer switch. When the transfer switch senses a power loss it'll automatically start the generator and then switch power over from the utility company to the generator, this usually takes 15-30 seconds. When power is restored for 5 minutes the transfer switch will automatically switch power back to the utility company. Then the generator will run an additional 5 minutes to cool down and then switch back to standby mode waiting for the next power outage.
